Living within hurricane territory is still something we're getting used to. The season lasts until November and since Rita swept through nearly three years ago every time there's a system in the Gulf people tend to panic and rightfully so. I have seen pictures of what the town looked like after the storm and they were incredible. We were all in our house last season when Humberto blew through in the middle of the night as a surprise category 1. We were all shocked to see how much the trees blew then, so needless to say, our family very quickly decided we'd not stay around for anything that could be stronger.
Well, now that Dolly has reached shore South of us, we're all fine. Several friends have called to check. We're just getting a lot and I mean a lot of rain! Hard to imagine that a system that is nearly 5 hours South of us could spread rain bands so far in diameter. So much rain that we actually had water coming into the boys' new bathroom this afternoon. Mark and the boys used a wet vac to soak it all up and we'll be closely monitoring it to make sure it doesn't take on any more. When that space was remodeled we had the foundation raised several inches to alleviate that problem but drainage is such a huge issue down here. Our soil is lovingly called gumbo and it does not take on water well.
My sister and her crew are headed to town tomorrow. We're all anxious to spend some time with them. Being so close now to my family has allowed many more visits than we've ever had in the past. I saw my other sister and her family two weeks ago and my parents will be coming to town next weekend.
